DIY iPhone Case Design

DIY iPhone Case Designs

I’ve been wanting to make my own cell phone case design for a while now, but I had a good case and didn’t want to replace it. Well, it broke last week, so I took my chance.

I love this craft because there are so many options. You can use a drawing (which I plan to make later), photography, scrapbook paper, Instagram photos, etc. Whatever you can make or find will work!

A design on paper

Step 1

Make a template.

I traced my phone on the paper I wanted and just added tabs to the edges so that the paper will wrap about my phone and stay in place.

Cut it out.

Place your cut out inside of the clear case and trace around the section for the camera.

Use the X-acto knife to cut that part out.

You should now have something like the above image. This can be your first design option and your template.

Step 2

Put the design against the back of your clear case and place your phone against it.

These two designs were made from this gorgeous painting on Wikimedia. I printed out the original upload, then used my template to cut out 2 more designs from the left and right side of the painting.

There are plenty of places to find images under the Creative Commons license. Check them out if you’re thinking about making your own phone case design.

I’m planning to make a few more designs and will upload them when I finish.

I’d love to hear what you think! Leave me some feedback in the comments.

Some Of The World’s Most Creative Sculptures

Wire fairy sculpture

When given the time, people can be SOOO creative. I’ve always been amused by sculpture because I’m not very good at making 3D art. I took some 3d modeling and paper art classes in college, but that’s about the extent of my experimentation.  Because of my lack of three-dimensional skill, I gravitate toward the people who can successfully accomplish those designs.

Earlier today, I found this post called 25 Of The Most Creative Sculptures And Statues From Around The World on Distractify and was so amazed at the talent and creativity that went in to each of them. These are my favorites, but you should definitely check out the blog post for the full effect. They’re all beautiful!

#onething Creative Challenge

You’re busy. You have so much to do every day and I can totally relate. But when do you find time to do something just for you? Creativity is a massive energy booster and it makes you feel like you’ve accomplished more than just your daily schedule, so I am urging you to take the #onething creative challenge.

#onething creative challenge

The challenge: create one new thing every day for one year. The idea came out of the re:Design community in Google+ and has flourished ever since. It is a personal challenge to be true to your passion whether it be drawing, painting, cooking, writing, or anything else. Create something. Create anything. If you can’t do it every day, commit to once a week. Whatever works best for you.

Whenever you create something, post a picture of it on Google+, and tag it #onething. You will have a bevy of supports and a endless stream of creative projects to observe for inspiration, or just for fun.

Are you in? I am. You can follow me here.

These are just a few examples that I pulled from the stream:

5 Great Gifts for Artists

As you know, I am a big fan of Etsy. I have my own shop and always support other artists if possible. When I can buy something from Etsy, rather than another website, I do. So, I was doing some of my own holiday shopping on there the other day and came across some great gifts for artists. There are so many people that tell me buying for an artist is really difficult, so I am going to help you out, assuming you are one of those people. If not, you might find something new and exciting. Click the images for a link to the Etsy page.

sketchbook

Leather sketchbook via FanyToshkovJournals $40.

I know the price sounds steep, but for an artist, price is nothing for a sketchbook. It has to be great quality paper. It also helps to have a pop of color and some leather!

eat, sleep,create,repeat mug

Eat, sleep, create, repeat mug via simplyprettyprints. $18.

Eat, sleep, create, repeat. As an artist, this is my whole day. And, typically, I start it off with coffee or tea, so this is perfect.

leather quote bracelet

Leather quote bracelet via belmonili. $20.

I love this one. I’m not crazy about leather bracelets, but I would definitelu buy this one, especially for the quote that is on it. This shop also takes custom orders so opportunies (for quotes) are limitless!

Coloring book

Coloring book via inkbook

I’m sure it sounds stupid, but coloring books are amazing. Think about every artist you know. Aren’t they constantly doodling? We do it to open our minds and get inspiration. Sometimes, though, the best place to get inspiration is in the world around us. Ink Book creates coloring books like the above images and they are a great way to open one’s mind. Give it a shot. Seriously.

Andy Warhol Clock

Andy Warhol Clock via AmericanDreamy. $10.99

Not all artists are Andy Warhol fans, but some are. And for those people, this is ideal. It is a unique gift!

It doesn’t have to be Andy Warhol though, there are plenty of these floating around on Etsy. You just have to look for them. This shop seems to have a few artists and musicians available.

Hopefully these few gift ideas helped you out a little bit. If you are still struggling though, try making something yourself. I know, you’re thinking I can’t make something for an artist because their work is better than mine. Don’t think like that. It isn’t “better”. It is different, and all artists have different ways of expressing themselves. We love handmade gifts!

DIY Digital Camera

BigShots DIY Digital Camera

This is one of the best design ideas I’ve seen in a long time: the DIY digital camera by BigShot. It was create for children and adults and was designed for learning. When you buy the camera, it is disassembled like in the image below.

Digital Camera parts and pieces

In order to use the camera, you obviously have to build it first. The mission behind this idea is that a camera designed for learning needs three things:

  1. kit assembly
  2. Creative features
  3. Low cost

When you finally get the camera built, it is fully-functional.

We live in such a demanding society where we want everything and we want it now. Yet, we typically know nothing about the  things we want, i.e. a car, a computer, and even a house. There are specialists we call, and companies that take care of our problems for us. Think about it, when something goes wrong with your car, you take it to a mechanic. When your computer gives you the blue screen of death, you take it to a computer center. And, in most cases, when something malfunctions in your home, you call a handyman (unless you are that person).

The BigShots digital camera is $89 and part of its creators’ proceeds will be used to send Bigshots to children in under-served communities around the world. That alone make me want to buy the camera.

It is a great idea to teach people about the products they use. What better way is there to learn about a digital camera than to assemble it yourself?

The experience

Duct Tape Prom Attire = $10,000 Scholarship!

Stuck at Prom Scholarship Content

This is the coolest scholarship I’ve ever seen! Students are encouraged to create prom dresses and tuxes with duct tape. If they had this scholarship when I was in high school (provided I knew about it), I would’ve been all over that! Anyway, the winner(s) receive $10,000. You can apply solo or as a couple. Applicants have to submit a photo of themselves in their prom attire to be considered. The finalists are chosen based on workmanship, originality, use of color, accessories, and use of duct tape. Check out the rules if you are interested. Warning, they are a bit lengthy.

Let’s get to the fun part… The duct tape prom dresses and tuxes!

Chevron patterned duct tape prom dressIt is unbelievable, the talent that goes into these prom outfits! Take a look at the gallery; there are a ton of couples and singles that have created dresses and tuxes for the scholarship.

What a way to bond with your prom date. Not to mention, these kids probably saved themselves, or their parents, hundreds of dollars. Who needs designer dresses anyway?!
