Poetic Twist: From Finance to Design

Teal wedding invitations
Tamika Quick started out in the corporate world of finance. After her relocation to Atlanta, GA, she decided to switch careers. She had experience with airbrushing and was eager to get back to her creative side. She designed the stationary for her destination wedding and, before she knew it, friends and family were asking for invitations for all of their events.

With some encouragement, she founded Poetic Twist Stationary and Design. She now designs invitations and business identity for weddings, and social or business events.

I have been a follower of Tamika’s blog for quite a while. She is always posting the latest and greatest designs. I am never disappointed!

DIY Digital Camera

BigShots DIY Digital Camera

This is one of the best design ideas I’ve seen in a long time: the DIY digital camera by BigShot. It was create for children and adults and was designed for learning. When you buy the camera, it is disassembled like in the image below.

Digital Camera parts and pieces

In order to use the camera, you obviously have to build it first. The mission behind this idea is that a camera designed for learning needs three things:

  1. kit assembly
  2. Creative features
  3. Low cost

When you finally get the camera built, it is fully-functional.

We live in such a demanding society where we want everything and we want it now. Yet, we typically know nothing about the  things we want, i.e. a car, a computer, and even a house. There are specialists we call, and companies that take care of our problems for us. Think about it, when something goes wrong with your car, you take it to a mechanic. When your computer gives you the blue screen of death, you take it to a computer center. And, in most cases, when something malfunctions in your home, you call a handyman (unless you are that person).

The BigShots digital camera is $89 and part of its creators’ proceeds will be used to send Bigshots to children in under-served communities around the world. That alone make me want to buy the camera.

It is a great idea to teach people about the products they use. What better way is there to learn about a digital camera than to assemble it yourself?

The experience

Creative Bookshelves

Etsy is always my go-to site to find something creative and unique. Not only is in a site for buying those unique and creative things, but it is also a site for inspiration. There are some wonderfully creative people out there and they deserve a lot of credit.

So, in my search for some creative bookshelves for my apartment, I found some great ones to share with you! I hope you like to read as much as I do, because I doubt you will enjoy these as much if not.

Click the images (or artist) to go to the shop.

Industrial style pipe bookshelf

Industrial pipes for a shelf? What a great idea!

Artist: NOBOXCO

Batman bookshelf

Seriously, how much more awesome does it get? I don’t know anyone who has a batman bookshelf! Unfortunately, I will be needing a bit more space.

Artist: mattjohnsondesigns

Piston book shelf

This bookshelf is made with real pistons! I got a little bit excited about that.

Balancing book shelf

Very inventive! You couldn’t fit too many books on this one but it is definitely a unique, creative element.

Artist: WoodCurve

Melting bookshelf

This is definitely my favorite! I always liked the wonderland/fairytale look and Salvador Dalí is one of my favorite artists. Can’t beat that!

Alright, so this one isn’t actually a bookshelf. It is an iPhone case. BUT being an iPhone user and loving books makes this case an awesome combination!

I hope you guys enjoyed these. 🙂

Pencil Carvings by Ágoston Birtalan

It has been pointed out to me that my post Pencil Sculptures by Dalton Ghetti is actually the work of Ágoston Birtalan. So, I did some research to make sure it checked out (which it did) and I have updated the previous post with the correct images. Here is the work of Ágoston Birtalan.

I apologize to both artists! You both create amazing work and should be recognized for your own achievements!

Ágoston is a Hungarian artist who creates pencil carvings. His favorite artists are Dalton Ghetti,Mizuta Tasogare,Kato Jado. So, I suppose it is a good thing that i mixed up his work with one if his favorites if I was going to mix it up at all, right?

Hopefully, more info about this artist to come…

Please be sure to check out Ágoston’s Facebook as well!

One Year of Blogging

wordpressGuess what?!

Today is the one year anniversary of the day I started Make Something Mondays! YAY!  Thank you, to my followers, for making my first year of blogging a great one!

What I’ve learned:

  • I am more crafty than I was a year ago– Seriously, I was WAAAAAAY more artsy than crafty. Now I can add another skill to my list.
  • You truly have to love what you choose to blog about– I could talk about art for hours, maybe even days, without running out of steam. People become interested in what you are talking about if you are passionate.
  • You are who you hang with– For those of you who blog, you know that you need to attract the right people and those people can really teach you something.
  • “Patience is a virtue”– My parents told me this my whole life, literally. They probably told me this before I could even talk. Success doesn’t happen over night and sometimes it is good that it takes a while. If you were that good then, you would have nothing to work toward.
  • It is a give and take relationship– If you give them something good then they give you a response.
  • Take an interest in your followers– I’m serious! There are a ton of interesting people out there and I’ve found many of them through blogging. I’ve formed some great relationships with my followers. You are all wonderful!

Leonid Afremov Paintings

I have posted Leonid Afremov’s paintings before but I have to do it again. His work is so amazing.

Leonid is a professional artist. He paints only with a palette knife and oil paints. I can’t get over how amazing the work is. Leonid was born in Vitebsk in 1955. He paints every day and posts work in many places. I like to look at his work on Deviant Art but it is all over the internet. You will find hundreds of search results for him.
