Exactly How Bored Are You?

Post image for Retired Russian Woman Decorates Her Home With 30,000 Bottle Caps

Olga Kostina,a resident of  the Siberian taigahas, decided to decorate her home with 30,000 plastic bottle caps (yes, that number is correct). She Made this beautiful design over the course of several years.

The Siberian Taiga is an area known for its natural beauty, but also has a population density of only three people per square kilometre. Olga enjoys collecting the bottle caps as a hobby to pass time, and when she gets enough she starts to decorate. Using just a hammer and some nails, and inspiration from traditional macrame motifs, she creates the detailed patterns. Olga plans to continue until every wall of her home is covered in a colourful bottle cap mosaic.

That is pretty inventive :-) Olga has my heart!

Spray Paint? Seriously!?

David Walker is a great artist. He start painting about three years ago (yes, you read that right). For the first  two years he only painted with black, white and pink paint because those colors were cheaper and allowed him to focus more on the subject than the colors.  One day he found a box of random colored paints in his studio and decided to try to use as many colors as he could. What a beautiful experiment!

Now to the brushless part. Walker doesn’t doesn’t like to use brushes. He uses spray paint because he wants his work to raise questions about graffiti and traditional painting.

Strips of Geometric Vinyl Tape

A pretty neat post by My Modern Metropolis that I had to share. This is pretty awesome!

Glasgow-based artist Jim Lambie can transform any space into a visual delight with his geometric tape designs. Using everyday vinyl tape, he creates angles and lines of contrasting colors that suggest movement and optical illusions. He can convert a once empty and quiet room into a space filled with energy. As viewers enter a converted space, they instantly have a visual interaction with the artwork.

The labor-intenstive installations take up to several weeks to complete. When speaking about his work, Lambie says, “Is the room expanding or contracting? Covering an object somehow evaporates the hard edge off the thing, and pulls you towards more of a dreamscape.”

As a former musician, the artist draws on musical references as inspiration. Often, the titles of his pieces refer to iconic bands or songs, including The Doors, Morrison Hotel (2005), and Careless Whisper (2009). The pieces depend on the architecture of the space, and thus are unique and fleeting installations that cannot be exactly reproduced anywhere else.

A Lady of Many Talents

Michelle Curiel is an artist who lives in Hollywood, CA. She is a lady of many talents but I greatly enjoy her colorful sketchbook illustrations. It seems as if it is a way for her to vent and relax. It gives you a peek into her mind.  They are mindful doodles, if you will…

I first found michelle on Instagram, an app for cell phones. I, then, was perusing Deviant Art a short time afterward and found her on there so I began to follow her work. She is really a fun and unique artist and she does what she wants. She doesn’t draw because others will like it. She draws because she loves it. That is something that is truly amazing. She deserves some serious recognition!

In addition to illustration, Michelle makes colorful feather mohawk, paintings, drawings, website designs, and takes a bit of her own photography. Please check out her links.

Cracked Beauty (DIY)

I like to bring my artistic skill to my nails. This is one of my favorite things to do because it can be messy and it still looks fun!

Things You Will Need:

Nail Polish

*A variety of bright colors

*Black crackle

*Clear

Step 1:

Paint small portions of your nails with each color of nail polish you have chosen. The more it looks like a toddler got ahold of your nail polish the better.

Step 2:

Once your colorful layer has dried, apply a generous amount of black crackle nail polish.

Step 3:

Add a layer of clear polish and you should have a shiny, colorful array of cracked beauty.

DIY Crayon Wall Art

I know that many people have made tutorials for this but it looked so neat that I had to make one of my own. It is one of the easiest crafts I have made. All together I would say it took no more than an hour and  cost less than $20. I suppose that depends on the size of your canvas though.

I enjoy the turnout.  :-)

Things You Will Need:

Crayons

Canvas

hair dryer

Newspaper

Hot melt glue

Step 1:

Stack your crayons into piles by color. Take out the black, grey and browns for optimal results.

Step 2:

Arrange the piles of colors in a straight line. Preferably in the order you want to glue them to the canvas.

Step 3:

Using the hot melt glue, adhere each crayon along the top of the canvas.

When you finish, lay down your newspaper.  Make sure you have a lot; this can get messy.

Step 4:

Turn on your hair dryer and keep in placed it the center of the crayons if you do not want a splatter effect.  If you do want the splatter effect occasionally  heat the crayons from the top so that the air can hit the melting wax.

The wax begins to melt quickly so be aware of how you are holding your hair dryer, otherwise your wax will be all over the place before you know it.

Continue heating the crayons until you have something that looks like this.

After about 20 mins you should have something that looks like this. Continue heating for more color.

Happy splattering!

Swirl Letter

Swirly letters are fun to make! It is a very simple process but takes a while. This one took me about an hour and a half.

Things you will need:

Scissors and/or exacto knife

3 pieces of colored construction Paper

A white sheet of paper

A black sheet of paper

hot melt glue

Step 1:

Take your 3 pieces of colored construction paper and cut them into small strips. You can choose to keep them the same width or vary them as I have done. Once you have them cut out, organize them in piles by color.

Step 2:

Use the black paper to cut out the letter of your choice. I chose M. When you are happy with your letter glue it to the center of your white paper.

Step 3:

Choose a strip of colored construction paper and wrap it tightly around a pencil or other slender object. You may also use your  fingers to wrap the paper instead of the pencil for a tighter swirl.

These are some optional shapes for your swirls.

A: The S shape-

Wrap about half of the strip tightly. Then, start on the other side of the strip and wrap in the opposite direction. You will end up with an S shape.

B: The swirl with loop-

Adhere the ends of your strip together. Now, wrap that end (the ends you’ve connection) toward the loop you have formed.

C: Tripple swirl-

Take 3 strips, one of each color, and begin to wrap them. You will end up with something like this.

D: Double swirl-

Start at one end of your strip and wrap about half way. Then, while holding the end you just wrapped, begin to wrap the other end in the same direction.

Step 4:

Add some glue to the bottom of your wrapped strip and adhere it to the letter you have cut out. Don’t go overboard on the glue.

Step 5:

Repeat steps 1-4 until completed. Your letter should look something like this when you begin your process.

*For the best results, use a combination of large and small swirls and alternate shapes and colors.

When your letter is completed it will look like a fanciful mess of colors and swirls!

If you want a add a bit more try making a boarder around your white paper. Experiment with colors and maybe even add some smaller swirls to the corner of your boarder. Or you could even add a boarder of just swirls.

This would like very nice in a shadow box in a child’s bedroom or in a simple frame with no glass in the living room. If you are feeling ambitious you could  swirl all of the letters of your last name and make a home-made sign!

Thank you for taking the time to read my tutorial.  If you are interested in the project but do not have time to make it then, get in touch with me. I will make one for you.
