As a designer, I’ve always been interested in color theory. During college, I took some psychology and sociology classes because the why behind everything sucked me in. Why do I like the color black? It isn’t a bold color that draws you in… Wondering is one thing, but I took it to a whole separate level and researched it, because I wanted to know why.

I’ve learned that my attraction to the color black had to have started in childhood. By the way, I don’t think it was necessarily anything black that I liked, I think it was the opposite. I was never much of a girly girl, but my mom would dress me in frilly, bold colored dresses (sometimes with polka dots) and put my hair in pigtails with a bow on each side. Awful, right? No offense Mom, but my hatred for those things probably stemmed from that time period when I had little to no say in what I wore. It is okay though, I’ve grown out of it. I love pink! Dresses really don’t make the cut though. They probably never will.

But I digress… There is a reason why we respond to each color in a certain way. A lot of that is cultural which is why the color theory works so well in marketing.

Thoughts? Are there any psychologists out there who can give me a different perspective?

  1. Very interesting reading .. never put that much into logos before … for me IKEA is blue and yellow because they are Swedish … but maybe there is a lot more to it than so. Thanks for … this one, great one.

    • thanks! There is a whole lot that goes into logos, packaging, book covers, etc. It is an interesting process.
